This conference explores the transmediation of K-pop as it expands into a network of formats, genres, and activities that stars and fans participate in together. In the K-pop ecology, K-pop is not only defined by the discrete, packaged units that are sold as K-pop, but about a broader network of media objects and media effects. K-pop production and distribution has been engulfed in a larger cultural, technological, and economic environment to the point where (to quote Thomas Lamarre’s observations on anime), K-pop “ceases to be an object in the received sense of the term, instead turning into a mode of existence.” How is K-pop as a kind of ecology and a “mode of existence” marshalled, transformed, and operationalized across seemingly disparate contexts and zones?
