Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) provide a valuable tool for higher education by making course materials freely accessible to learners around the world. However, MOOCs also raise questions of cost, quality, and accountability, and have become controversial in some circles. This workshop introduces a specific MOOC developed at the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Cinema through a Global Lens, as a case study to better understand the challenges faced by teachers who decide to produce a MOOC in film studies. In this workshop, we discuss the specifics of producing a MOOC, including funding, instructional design, copyright, online platforms, assembling a teaching team, and related issues. We examine the choice of topics, level of instruction, demographics of learners, as well as the geographic coverage of the course.
