A message to the Center for Race & Gender community from UC Berkeley Vice Chancellor for Research Paul Alivisatos:

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that after a very competitive search we have appointed Leti Volpp, the Robert D. and Leslie Kay Raven Professor of Law, as the next Director of the Center for Race and Gender (CRG), effective July 1, 2017.

Berkeley distinguishes itself among the world’s great universities by taking on a double task: challenging society to realize its full potential for humanity in light of the ideals of justice and equality while inciting the critical imagination to form new understandings of our shared social world. Professor Volpp and the CRG are true exemplars of the best of Berkeley–where vision and the creation of knowledge converge with public service and transformative action.

Professor Volpp is both a highly visible and respected scholar and accomplished legal advocate in the fields of citizenship, migration, and gender and racial equality. She has been teaching law since 1998, first at American University and then at University of California, Los Angeles before joining the faculty at Berkeley in 2005. Before teaching, Volpp clerked for Judge Thelton E. Henderson and served as a public interest lawyer, with a focus on immigrants’ rights. She has published important writing on culture and feminist theory, on race and citizenship, and on immigration and national identity.

Volpp succeeds Professor Evelyn Nakano Glenn, the founding Director of the center, whose indefatigable efforts over many years have shaped the CRG into the vibrant center it is today by fostering and expanding its community. The Berkeley community remains deeply grateful for her leadership.

Please join me in congratulating Professor Leti Volpp for taking on this important role, Professor Evelyn Nakano Glenn for her years of service, and the members of our search advisory committee, led by Professor Judith Butler, for their tremendous efforts in this search. Thank you.

Best regards,

A. Paul Alivisatos
